The VirtualBox platform is a desktop virtualization system for Windows, Linux and Mac OS hosts supporting the Windows, Linux, OS/2 Warp, OpenBSD and FreeBSD operating systems as guests. VirtualBox is based on the open-source code of Qemu. VirtualBox is supplied in two versions – with closed source code and with open source code (VirtualBox Open Source Edition). The full version of the product with the closed source code is also available for free personal use. Currently, VirtualBox provides the following features:

  • native x86 virtualization that does not require the support of the Intel VT and AMD-V hardware technologies (that can be enabled in the settings, however)
  • a user-friendly interface
  • supporting Windows, Linux and Mac OS host systems
  • Guest VM Additions to make it easier to interact with host operating systems and to optimize their performance
  • supporting multiprocessor and multi-core systems (only as host ones, no support of virtual SMP for providing multiprocessor support in guest systems)
  • stability (as compared to other Open Source solutions)
  • supporting audio device virtualization
  • high performance
  • supporting various kinds of network interaction (NAT, Host Networking via Bridged, Internal)
  • supporting virtual machine snapshots that you can roll back to from any state of the guest system
  • describing the virtual machine configuration in the XML format
  • supporting Shared Folders simple file sharing between the host and guest systems
